The 7 productivity tips Elon Musk shared with his employees

The 7 productivity tips Elon Musk shared with his employeesThe 7 productivity tips Elon Musk shared with his employeesElon Musk gets a lot done. The 46-year-old entrepreneur and CEO is revolutionizing the spaceflight industry with SpaceX, transforming the world of the electric car at Tesla, and pushing neuroscience and transportation forward at Neuralink and the Boring Company. As SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell said at the 2018 TED Conference, Musks goals are a lot to keep up with. When Elon says something, you have to pause and not blurt out Well, thats impossible, she said. You zip it, you think about it, and you find ways to get it done.Recently, Musk reportedly announced to Tesla employees that he wants to adopt a 24/7 shift schedule to get production for Teslas Model 3 electric car on track. In an email obtained by Jalopnik, Musk explained a number of changes in the works for Tesla.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest care er news and advice wherever you go.Hes asking for quite a lot, so at the end of that email, he offered employees a list of his own productivity recommendations. From those tips, its clear that Musk is clearly not a fan of meetings, bureaucracy, hierarchy, or any system that impedes immediate communication. He prefers people apply common sense to the task at hand.He also told employees that if they had any ideas for making work at Tesla better and more efficient, they should let him know. Here are the seven productivity tips Musk offered in the letter, in his own words.Large-format meetings waste peoples timeExcessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time. Please get rid of all large meetings, unless youre certain they are providing value to the whole audience, in which case keep them very short.Meetings should be infrequent unless a matter is urgentAlso get rid of frequent meetings, unless you are dealing with an extremely urgent matter. Meeti ng frequency should drop rapidly once the urgent matter is resolved. If you dont need to be in a meeting, leaveWalk out of a meeting or drop off a call as soon as it is obvious you arent adding value. It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time.Avoid confusing jargonDont use acronyms or nonsense words for objects, software, or processes at Tesla. In general, anything that requires an explanation inhibits communication. We dont want people to have to memorize a glossary just to function at Tesla.Dont let hierarchical structures make things less efficientCommunication should travel via the shortest path necessary to get the job done, not through the chain of command. Any manager who attempts to enforce chain of command communication will soon find themselves working elsewhere. If you need to get in touch with someone, do so directlyA major source of issues is poor communication between depts. The way to solve this is allow free flow of information betwe en all levels. If, in order to get something done between depts, an individual contributor has to talk to their manager, who talks to a director, who talks to a VP, who talks to another VP, who talks to a director, who talks to a manager, who talks to someone doing the actual work, then super dumb things will happen. It must be ok for people to talk directly and just make the right thing happen.Dont waste time following silly rulesIn general, always pick common sense as your guide. If following a company rule is obviously ridiculous in a particular situation, such that it would make for a great Dilbert cartoon, then the rule should change. This articleoriginally appeared on BusinessInsider.

Things You Can Do When You Hate Your New Job

Things You Can Do When You Hate Your New JobThings You Can Do When You Hate Your New JobDo you hate the new job you just started already? If only it were possible to really know what a job will be like, before you take it. Unfortunately, no matter how carefully you prepare and weigh the pros and cons before accepting a new position, theres no way to be 100 percent sure what youre getting into until youre on the job, and then its too late. Or is it? If youre just starting a new gig, and its beginning to look more like a nightmare than a dream job, dont despair. There are plenty of things you can do, right now, to minimize the pain and get your career headed back in the right direction. 7 Things To Do When You Hate Your New Job 1. Figure out whether the job is the problem. Change is hard on most people. If youre someone who needs a while to feel comfortable in a new environment, give yourself that acclimation period before you assume your new job is at fault. You might need to ad just to new procedures, new people, a new corporate culture, before you can be sure that the job itself is the problem. Is it just a rough beginning, or do you really hate the job you just started? Know that youre not the only person to have regrets about accepting a position that turned out not to be a good fit. A CareerBuilder survey reports that 66 percent of workers have accepted a job and then realized it welchesnt the right job for them. Half (50 percent) of behauptung employees quit within six months, while 37 percent stuck with the job. The main reasons given for the job not working out were Toxic work culture (46 percent)Boss management style (40 percent)Job didnt match what was described in the job posting and interviews (37 percent)Lack of clear expectations around the role (33 percent) 2. Identify the core issues. Still feeling vaguely uneasy, after waiting out the new kid phase or worse yet, perfectly aware of what you dont like about the new job? Write it down. State the issues as clearly as possible, and be specific. If your new boss is the problem, is it her management style, attitude, skill set, priorities? If the role itself is whats bothering you, what would you change about it to make it better? The clearer you can be about whats making you unhappy, the better the chances are that youll be able to fix it or move on to a new job that suits you better. 3. Look for silver linings. Unless youre independently wealthy, you probably cant stroll into your new bosss office and say, Well, thanks for the opportunity. I think this is the part where I turn in my resignation letter, and walk out. (Although its fun to fantasize about.) No matter what you decide to do, youre going to need to bide your time, at least for a little while. As you do that, look for the not-awful parts of your job. Chances are, there are things youd like about this role, if it werent for the deal-breakers you outlined above. Recognizing those good(ish) aspects wont just make y ou happier in the short-term, while youre stuck there itll help you understand what you enjoy doing at work in the long-term, which will guide you as you pick future job opportunities. 4. Keep that resume up-to-date. Even if you love your job, its a good idea to do this. For an easier time tailoring your resume to future roles, you should also keep a copy of your CV without this latest gig on it. If you start looking for work the week after you take your new job, you wont want to include the role when you apply for new positions. Job hopping might not be a big red flag to every employer these days, but a two-week-long tenure at your latest job will raise some questions you probably dont want to answer. Its hard to be positive and professional and honest about why youre jumping ship so soon. 5. Network, network, network. At least 60 percent of all jobs are found by networking. Your next job could be one of them. Nows the time to look up those old colleagues, roommates, professors, an d friends, and take them out to coffee or connect with them on LinkedIn. You never know who will be the person to send the perfect job opportunity your way. 6. Dont be afraid to move backward. If you moved on voluntarily, you could consider whether its possible to go back to your old job. Sometimes, the way forward is by going back. If you liked your old job, but thought it was time to move on, this new situation might make you rethink that. Not sure how to go about doing it? Heres a sample letter that you can customize to ask your old employer about returning to your former job. If your old job isnt going to work out as your next new job, quietly start a confidential job search so your employer doesnt discover the fact that youre looking to leave already. 7. When you move on, make this job disappear. Whether you return to your old position, find a new job, or quit to do something new (return to school, consult or freelance, etc.), the important thing to remember is that youre und er no obligation to include every brief stint on your resume. If you stay at your less-than-perfect new job for a very short period of time, and learn nothing that would contribute to your candidacy for another position, the smart move is to leave it off your resume.

In the Job Search, Make Your Own Luck

In the Job Search, Make Your Own LuckIn the Job Search, Make Your Own LuckTempting as it may be, dont run screaming out the door of your current workplace quite yet.Blind Pollyanna-esque hopefulness probably isnt the way to go, either, but a healthy dose of pragmatism is closer to a solid cure to get you through this uncertain moment in time. The jobs really are out there, but you need to take a few stepsto set yourself apart and snag one. Its oft-repeated, but theres a basis for it remember that when youre looking for a job, youre selling yourself.Sure, simply touting your skill set certainly helps. But having a cover letter that clearly spells out why youre the person for that particular job is going to help more than the cleanest resume on the planet if HR doesnt think your cover letter was engaging or interesting enough to warrant a close look at your resume.(Hey, theyre human too.)Be succinct without boring them (and of course, while giving them the information they need to hire y ou) and youll stand out.Not only should you sell yourself, you should be ready to brand yourself (but put that cattle brand away).Snag the domain for your name (e.g.www.janedoe.com) and start building a site that underscores your resume and your specific experience.Show, dont tell.If youre a writer, put your published clips on the site.If youre a designer, show pieces of your work.Along with a short note, email the link to prospective employers (making sure its well-designed and cleanly laid-out, of course) so that they dont have to wade through attachments like they do for other job applicants.Create your own opportunities. An email to friends and contacts within your industry letting them know that youre looking for new challenges is not only more effective than blindly sending out hundreds of resumes (even well-crafted ones), but its also a more discreet way of protecting your personal information as well, especially if youre looking for a new job while youre currently still emplo yed.Think outside your usual realm.Rather than sniffing out leads on generalized job boards that are going to inevitably receive hundreds of applications per posting, start thinking more in terms of specific companies for which youd enjoy working.Research businesses contact information and check job postings on their web site. And even if they dont have any current openings, dont let that deter you- send in your resume to HR with a note explaining why youd like to work there. If a location opens in the future that matches your experience, you may just end up at the top of the pile. Even if the job opportunities arent yet beating down your door, there are ways to realistically stopgap your search in the meantime. And remember- while you wait for the recession tide to officially turn, theres nothing wrong with blazing your own trail.

How to Build Your Employer Target List Find Your Dream JobHow to Build Your Employer Target List - Find Your Dream JobAt this point in your job search, it is a good idea to have an employer target list. Whats that? A target list is a list of companies that you would love to work for. These may be companies that tend to offer jobs that fit your interests, organizations thathave the company culture you desire, and/or organizations with a mission you believe in. They are employers you would love to work for, given the opportunity. A Target List Saves You Time Why make a list? With a target list in hand, you will actually save yourself time in your job search. Even if it feels productive to apply to every job opening you come across, you are actually wasting your time and energy. Instead, you should apply only to jobs at companies that you believe are a good fit for you. There is no need to waste your time applying and interviewing for jobs that do bedrngnis match yourqualification s and/or goals. Even if you accept a job at a company that is not right for you, chances are that you will not want to stay there very long. It is better to take the time to find your ideal companies and apply to jobs there to find along-lasting job that you love. Creating Your Target List Below are several ways to create your target list. 1) Search for Best Company lists. Many websites list the best companies to work for in a variety of different industries. For example, Fortune ranks companies in a variety of categories, including the Fortune 100, Fortune 500, and Fortune 1000 (based on gross revenue), the best small companies, the best companies for millennials, and more. Glassdoor and Forbes also offer lists of top companies. Look through the lists that match your interests, read the descriptions of each company, and write down the companies that fit your industry interests and your ideal company culture. 2) Locate your Chamber of Commerce. Your local chamber of commerce sho uld have a list of local companies. Take a look at this list to see if there are any local companies that fit your interests. You can use this directory to find your local chamber of commerce. Some chambers of commerce have job listings online, so check those if they are available. 3) Join professional associations. If you belong to any professional associations, look on their websites to find a list of member companies. If you do not belong to any associations, review this directory of associations listed by state, category, and type. Find associations in your industry, and see if you can access each associations list of companies. 4) Browse LinkedIn. If you have any contacts who work in your field, look at their LinkedIn profiles (or other social media profiles) to see where they work. Similarly, look at members of LinkedIn groups who are related to your industry, and see where they are working. 5) Check within your network. Talk to your friends, neighbors, family, and business an d professional connections. Where do they work? Do any of those organizations sound like a good fit? If they do, ask about job openings or even the possibility of a referral. Narrow Your List Once you have created a list through behauptung methods, it is time to narrow your list to include onlythe companies that are truly a perfect or near-perfect fit. To do this, you will need to research the companies on your list. First, visit each companys website. Read each companys mission statement and any otherinformation the site may have about the work environment, the people the company hires, and anything else you can learn about the company culture. You can also visit LinkedIns Companies section to find company information. This section provides information on each company culture, as well as job openings and connections you have at each company. Glassdoor is also a good site for reading company reviews, ratings, salary information, and more. Based on this information, cross out any companies on your list that are not a strong fit. Expand Your List One More Time If you feel that your list is now too short, or that it only contains extremely well-known companies, consider expanding your list a bit. Look on LinkedIns Companies section or on Glassdoor to find some of the organizations that are competing against the organizations on your list. Research these companies, and if any of them seem like a good fit, add them to the list. The Final List Ultimately, these steps should result in a list of 10 - 20 companies that you will proceed to target in your job search. As you continue to job search, feel free to remove or add companies as you get a better feel for the type of organization you would like to work for.

11 interview questions to help you decide if a job is right for you

11 interview questions to help you decide if a job is right for you 11 interview questions to help you decide if a job is right for you When it comes to job interviews, we all know coming  prepared  is key to making a great impression. But  the questions you ask  during your interview are just as important as the answers you give - because asking the right questions can tell you if the role and the company culture are the right fit for you.Asking the culture question plainly (“So, what’s the company culture like here?”) isn’t likely to get you a very nuanced answer.  Adam Grant, the organizational psychologist, Wharton professor, and  New York Times  bestselling author of  Give and Take  and  Originals, gave a great example of how to frame the question differently: “Ask people to tell you a story about something that happened at their organization but wouldn’t elsewhere,” he  wrote. For more ideas, we asked members of the Thrive Global community to share their best tried-and-tested interview questions to discover if a job and company is right for you.“In the last week at work, what made you feel chall enged and what made you smile?Ӊ€œAsk questions that invite meaningful conversation and insightful, genuine responses. This will help you tell if the company or job aligns with your goals and values. Here are three of my favorites: ‘When you reflect back on your last week at work, what made you feel challenged, and what made you smile?’ ‘What recent examples of mentoring or coaching in action have you seen in your daily work here?’ ‘Whose leadership style in this organization inspires you and why?’” - Shea Ki, interview coach, Ashburn, VA“What are the five skills I’ll use most here?Ӊ€œJob descriptions don’t always give us a true understanding of the job, so asking a question that could help us align our chosen skill set with the position is a great starting point. Our ‘chosen skill set’ is not necessarily all we’re good at, but rather, skills we want to spend the most time on in our next position. Here’s the question: ‘What are the five skills I will use most often in this position?’”- Sharon Wilson, learning experience consultant, Hainesville, IL“How have your company values played out?Ӊ€œI think these three questions are worth asking: ‘Could you share some stories and/or examples of how the company values have played out with your employees and customers?’ ‘What level of support and professional growth is available in the position I applied for?’ ‘How does the organisation give back to their employees and the community, financially and otherwise?’” - Shivani Bhagi, career success and leadership coach, London, UK“What are the highlights and lowlights of your last staff survey?Ӊ€œI’ve started to frame questions around culture by asking, ‘Describe your culture in three words,’ and ‘What were the highlights and lowlights of your last staff survey?’”- Alison Stokes, corporate communications, London, UK“How are problems surfaced and solved here?Ӊ€œWhen I have a job interview, the first thing I do is conduct my own in-depth research of the company, which helps me know what to ask. Outside of the standard questions about the job description, pay, benefits, vacation, etc., I’d also like to know about these topics: How are problems acknowledged and solved in the role I applied for? Why has this company been successful? How do you see me contributing to the company’s success now and in the future? Where is the company heading? Depending on what the organization is about, I’ll ask more intimate questions about the process or services provided. I’ve posed these questions in the past, and each time, the dialogue made the interviewer feel like I knew more about their company than they did.”- Craig Dubecki, singer, speaker, author, life coach, Ontario, Canada“How much autonomous innovation is allowed and expected?Ӊ€œI always ask about the level of autonomous innovation allowed and expected. As a creative thinker, I’m constantly coming up with new ideas for content, different channels to explore, and new systems to improve efficiency. My favorite roles have been in jobs where I’m allowed to propose a project and work on it independently, as long as it doesn’t interfere with my primary duties. If the company has rigid rules of operation, I know I won’t excel there.”- Alexis Anthony, marketing manager, Washington, D.C.“What two things make you love coming to work?Ӊ€œI always suggest aski ng interviewers to tell you the two things that make them love coming to work each day. An interviewer will tell you the usual, HR-approved points about the company, but knowing their ‘why’ will give you a real example of what’s positive about the company. It also usually opens a door of conversation about common ground/interests, and the interviewer will remember you because you asked about them.”- Tina Leigh McDonald, leadership facilitator and youth career coach, Milton Keynes, UK“How does this company demonstrate commitment to employee well-being?”  Ã¢€œI think your company should know you as both an employee and a person. I recently read a statistic saying that the average American will spend a staggering 90,000+ hours at work in their lifetime. Sadly, I wasn’t shocked. Our careers play a substantial role in professional, social, and personal development. Work fuels your relationships, adventures, and experiences with disposable income and contributes to your futu re with discretionary income. My advice is to make sure your company gets to know you as a person first so that they’re mindful of how you spend your time outside of work, and what you’re planning for your future. I always ask, ‘How does this company demonstrate their commitment to employee well-being?’ and follow up with, “Can you describe this company’s unique definition of work-life balance?’ This will help you understand how the company can fit into your life - not just one chapter of your career.”- Melissa Muncy, content marketing, San Francisco, CA“What problem is your team trying to solve?Ӊ€œHere’s a great question to ask a hiring manager in order to trigger open-ended dialogue: ‘What problem is your team and/or company trying to solve?’ This helps you picture the potential impact you can make, but also help you take the pulse of the team. When I look back at my key career pivots, asking this specific question has always helped me gain perspective on how I could contribute, relate my experiences to what the team could benefit from, and be of value to others. There’s a reason why we all do what we do, so it’s important to find fulfillment in values, purpose, and objectives. The best work happens when people come together, hustle, and work towards solving problems they deeply care about.”- Vinutha Narayan, senior global program manager, San Francisco, CA“How does good work get recognized and rewarded?Ӊ€œStep One is to decide what ‘the right fit’ means to you - for me, it’s always three-fold: Working for and with great people Having the flexibility to do your work within deadlines but without necessarily needing to be in the office all the time The ability to accelerate career growth Ask the manager and the team about their leadership style, how they make sure the team delivers their best work, and how members encourage each other to do well. For flexibility, ask the team about how they manage personal commitments that have to be done during work hours, with work deadlines. For career growth, ask them how good work gets recognized and rewarded.”- NR, business development, Purchase, NY“Tell me about someone who came to the company and succeeded quickly.Ӊ€œWhen you ask questions during a job interview, the employer has to sell the role to you. Therefore, you should ask many open-ended questions. Here are my favorites: ‘How will my manager measure my success in this role?’ The answer to this question reveals what you should focus on (e.g. sales, revenue, getting new clients, publishing content daily). ‘Can you tell me about someone who came to your company and did a great job of contributing to your team quickly?’ The answer to this question gets at company culture, values, and a path to success.” - Milena Rangelov, civil engineer and researcher, Washington, D.C.Follow us  here  and subscribe  here  for all the latest news on how you can keep Thriving. This article first appeared on Thrive Global.

Bad Recruiter Five Career Alternatives

Bad Recruiter Five Career Alternatives Bad Recruiter Five Career Alternatives Everything we do on this site is to help recruiters make better decisions and progress their careers. But if you feel like youre a bad recruiter and just cant get traction in the career, its a good idea to get out of the profession. Both corporate and agency recruiters are usually passionate about their careers, and if youre not, chances are the profession wont take you anywhere worth going. The great thing about recruiting is that the skills you learn are highly translatable to other professions. If you particularly enjoy certain aspects of your job, it might be a good idea to shift into one of these other  analogous  careers: Human Resources: If you find that you enjoy the organizational and relationship oriented aspect of working with people in their careers, but do not enjoy the pitch, you might want to consider a career in HR. HR Generalists, Benefits Coordinators, and other functions require highly detailed understanding of corporate policies, benefits systems, laws, and technology. Human Resources can offer a great career path with progressive advancement. Career Counseling: Some recruiters love helping candidates they will accidentally spend hours interviewing prospective candidates, helping them with their resumes, giving them career advice, and advising them on different industries and professions. It can be very satisfying to help people advance their interviewing skills or even help a candidate decide on a career. However, especially in agency recruiting, this type of relationship can get in the way of performance. Recruiters need to find a happy medium between volume and the depth in which they help candidates. Career counseling has many different iterations, for example college career centers, career psychologists, job counselors, etc If the career mentoring aspect of recruiting is clearly what you enjoy most, one of these other professions might be a better career. Sales: If you relish the cold-calling and meeting aspect of recruiting sales, but dont enjoy selling air, product sales might be a better type of job for you. Recruiting salespeople typically thrive on relationship, service oriented client partnerships. Many professionals in recruiting sales find it incredibly frustrating that they are selling services that they dont know if they can deliver. If you hate this aspect of recruiting, you might do better selling a concrete product software, technology, medical devices,  pharmaceuticals, etc Marketing: Recruiting sales and even sourcing candidates involves a very strong element of marketing. Recruiting salespeople often market their companys services through mailings, Internet ads, and other advertising vehicles. Recruiters and sourcers also market to candidates by developing rich media recruitment campaigns, great job ad copy, etc If you enjoy the actual marketing process and developing and analyzing data, a career in marketing might be a good alternative. A good test is if you think of your potential candidates as a target demographic, it might be time to move on. Social Media: Recruiters naturally gravitated toward social media outlets because they are natural relationship builders and because reaching out to broad numbers of professionals fits with the recruiters job. However, social media can be a bit of a rabbit hole a recruiter too caught up in social media and social networking might never come out. If you enjoy the technical elements of social media, enjoy writing and community building, you might consider making a career change. There are a lot of new jobs in social media administration, web  copy-writing and marketing, and developing social media employment campaigns. If social media has become more than a method of developing clients and candidates if your interest lies mostly with the tool itself it might be time to move on. If you feel like you cant succeed in your recruiting career, it might be time to examine why. It should be said that passion is a job requirement for a recruiter. If youre not 100% invested in your recruiting career, changes are you wont go very far. Recruiters often spend time trying to help candidates identify their real skills and true calling. It can be much harder to turn that perspective within. However, if you feel like a bad recruiter, this should be cause for further thought and examination of your career.

Applying for a Job with a Company That Has Already Turned You Down

Applying for a Job with a Company That Has Already Turned You Down Applying for a Job with a Company That Has Already Turned You Down Does an employer rejecting you once mean the end of all hope of working for that company? Not necessarily. Things can be different the next time around, so taking another stab may prove a smart decision. Consider these questions when pondering whether or not to apply for a job with a company that has already turned you down: JOB HUNTING? BROWSE OPEN POSITIONS Is the position different? You sought (but didn’t land) an administrative assistant position in the marketing department of Company XYZ. Now, a similar role opens up at XYZ in accounts payable. Should you try again? Sure! Your background may be more suitable for this role, the responsibilities likely will be somewhat different, or you may “click” better with the person doing the hiring for this department. Consider it a fresh opportunity, and tailor your material to why you’re perfect for this position. Depending on the company’s size and records it keeps, nobody may even realize you ever tried for a job down the hall. If a different position arises in the same department as before, still consider applying. Each job has its own set of qualifications. The hiring manager picked someone else last time based on the specifics of that job and the applicant pool from which they could choose. For this new opening, you might be the one who stands out. Worried about an awkward interview because of the previous rejection? Forget the past, and sell yourself now. “In my estimation, its much more beneficial to a job candidate to focus on the interview at hand and the position associated with that job than any interaction which might have occurred between you and the client company in the past,” says Alan Guinn, CEO of  Guinn Consultancy Group. “After all, if the client didnt believe you were qualified for the position available, they wouldnt invest the time now to interview you for a position. And the fact you have achieved an interview clearly means you have surpassed many other applicants for this role.” Have you become a better candidate? Notice that a job you found intriguing is open again or want to take another crack at your dream company? Before rushing in, thoughtfully evaluate where you stand now compared to last time. Have you taken steps to address weaknesses? If so, highlight that completed certification or describe how you’ve assumed greater leadership at your current role. However, if you’re basically just submitting the same resume without any improvements, waiting until you can make a stronger presentation might yield better results. Has a sufficient length of time passed? Finally, remember that companies aren’t stagnant. Time often brings new people in charge, modified short- and long-term goals, and different staffing needs. Your credentials may look better to a different set of eyes or in light of the employer’s changed objectives. How much time should pass before trying again? While there’s no magic answer, career experts generally recommend at least three to six months. In the meantime, keep up with what is going on at the company and look for ways to develop your skills. When the time comes, you’ll be ready to seize that second chance! Find a Job That Fits Your Lifestyle SEARCH OPEN FLEXIBLE JOBS

Things Recruiters Want but Will Never Tell You

Things Recruiters Want but Will Never Tell You Things Recruiters Want but Will Never Tell You The reality of recruiters is that they are tasked with finding the best job candidate for a position. Then, they put their faith and trust in the candidate. Why? They are hoping the job candidate does not become a “bad hire” or do something to tarnish the recruiter’s reputation. It is a delicate balance between finding what people are asking for while managing personalities in the process. Therefore, there are things recruiters will never tell you to maintain that balance. Recruiters cannot start telling job candidates everything they need to know in order to get hired. It is not their job. If the job candidate knew everything it would not change the fact that the candidate may not be a right fit for the job, anyway. However, for the purposes of job searching it is helpful to know these secret things below that recruiters will never tell you, or cannot tell you. 1. They do not choose who gets hired Recruiters can influence decisions, but they do not choose who is hired. Hiring managers do the hiring. It would be a mistake to believe that recruiters will never tell hiring managers what they think of certain job candidates. As a job candidate, it is a good idea to treat recruiters as if they’re the ones making the final decision. It is a safer bet than only treating the decision-maker with respect and kindness. 2. They know way more about the company than they lead on Recruiters always have some type of professional relationship with hiring managers. Establishing a strong connection with a recruiter may help you find out information on the company others applying for jobs will not have. The better your relationship with a recruiter, the more likely the recruiter will be responsive to your requests for info, feedback, and advice. Always thank everyone in the hiring process, regardless of the outcome. Just never forget to thank the recruiter who helped you. 3. The salary offered is not the highest offer We all know the game: Ask for more than you really want. Then, negotiate to get what you want. The same game is played when offering a salary to you. Recruiters are given a range of salaries before offering a position to a candidate. And they must aim between that range. True, it is in the best interest of a recruiter to get you paid more and earn a higher commission. But they will likely start with the lowest salary offer in order to get the deal done. For this reason, as a job candidate, you must be able to negotiate your salary. Do you salary research beforehand on sites like Glassdoor? All positions have a salary cap, so be sure you do not start a salary negotiation by sounding unrealistic or uncompromising. 4. The job you’ve applied for is already taken It is obnoxious for job candidates, but companies still post job openings for positions that are already taken. If you get an interview for a position with a recruiter, then find out the job is no longer available, do not waste your energy taking it personally. Getting out and interviewing is always good practice and it was not a reflection of anything you did. 5. Their job is a borderline sales position Recruiters are not necessarily in business to get you hired. They are in the business of making sure you accept an offer. Therefore, they are going to sell you (the job candidate) to the hiring manager and sell the job offer to you, too. They have to sell you on the idea that the offer being made is the best one for you. Why? Recruiters will make money when job candidates accept an offer. Does this make them dishonest? No. But it does mean as the job candidate that you have to be diligent about deciding who you work with and the type of job you want. Do your research and make sure the companies you decide to work with are respected in their field and provide an honest service to job candidates. 6. Your chances are better than you think Recruiters will receive dozens of applications for a job. But if you are in touch with a recruiter about a job, it is a good thing. Why? Recruiters contact fewer job candidates than most job seekers realize. If they contacted you it means you are in the running!

Marine Infantry Packing Up for a Combat Patrol in Iraq

Marine Infantry Packing Up for a Combat Patrol in Iraq Marine Infantry Packing Up for a Combat Patrol in Iraq by Cpl. Shawn C. Rhodes FALLUJAH, Iraq The standard fighting load for Marines in Iraq is anything but standard. Sure, there are the must-have items - weapon, first aid kit, helmet and flak jacket - but when it comes to the nice-to-haves its every Marine for himself. Were leaving on a patrol in five minutes! Get your gear together! said Staff Sgt. Christian B. Amason, a platoon sergeant for Company G, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, assigned to the 1st Marine Division. That used to be a cut and dry order, but with  todays gear, combat loads are tailor fitted. Even packs come with detachable pouches, adding and taking away space for gear. Its a balancing act. Too much gear, it weighs the Marine down. Too little, and they suffer needlessly. Take Amason, for example. Hes a former Army Special Forces soldier and Marine sniper. Hes got a good number of patrols under his belt. He knows what he needs and what he can live without when he takes to the field. I always take what I call my catch-all-gear, explained Amason, a 32-year-old from Elora, Tenn. Those are the basics like your weapon, ammunition, optics, navigational equipment and flak jacket and helmet. With a water supply, that makes for at least 30 pounds on your upper body. If youre a (machine) gunner, then it could easily be 50 pounds youre carrying. Amason knows what will keep him alive in the field, but there is one item with which he never parts. No matter where I go in the field, I always take my woobie, he added. Thats what my wife calls my poncho liner. According to Amason, the poncho liner is the best piece of gear he has, keeping him warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. Other Marines have different necessities they insist on carrying. Im the go-to-guy on a patrol, a regular walking Saigon Sams, said Lance Cpl. Ryan P. Taylor, in reference to the military supply store just outside Camp Lejeune, N.C. The Dumfries, Va. rifleman is known to always have a steady supply of chemical lights, parachute cord, fly tape, shoe-goo used to repair boots and superglue, among other things in his pack. You never know when youre going to need something, so I try to bring it with me, he added. The mainstay of infantrymen in the field is undoubtedly chow. If not carrying the Meals, Ready-to-Eat they are issued, many Marines have a good supply of junk food. This is especially true for Sgt. James M. Back, a platoon guide from Logan, Utah. Known as Snacks to his platoon mates, the Marine always has a steady supply of food. I blame it on my wife, he said She really takes care of me with care packages, so everyone knows to come to me for junk food. Back also knows how to pack for a patrol. Carrying extra sergeant chevrons, zip ties, caffeine pills for late patrols, different sized-batteries, spare socks, a whistle, sunscreen and a flashlight, Back feels prepared for whatever may come. Marines learn from the experience of their squad leaders and then find out for themselves what works for them, Back said. It really comes down to what youre willing to carry to be prepared for whatever you could get into.

From the beginning, each section provides adequate details without excessive wordiness or distracting formatting features. The jobseeker has pared the professional summary statement down to three sentences and carefully composed them to give a brief overall impression of this jobseeker̢۪s extensive experience. The core qualifications section is simila rly impressive. This jobseeker includes eight bullet points, which is in keeping with the scope of his professional responsibilities and achievements. As you write your own resume, you want to model it after this example, so you are more likely to land the interview. The education section is the simplest, most basic section. This is perfect form for management positions. The only reason to include other education details such as the GPA is if the jobseeker is a recent graduate with little experience and a GPA above 3.0.Why You Need a Strong Vice President ResumeFor highly desirable positions like vice president, there are sure to be many applicants for each job opening. How to grow your appreciation for others learn to value them

How to grow your appreciation for others â€" learn to value them How to grow your appreciation for others â€" learn to value them First and foremost,  don’t try to fake it.  Trying to act like you appreciate someone when you actually don’t typically doesn’t go well, and perceived inauthenticity will undermine any trust that may exist in the relationship.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Secondly,  don’t try to push through it and “make yourself” appreciate a colleague. (And you don’t have to feel guilty about it, either!) What we have learned over time is that to appreciate someone is both a heart issue and behavior. And, like any feeling we may experience, you can’t force yourself to appreciate someone. However, similar to our other feeling responses, there are ways to make it  more likely  that we will eventually have a heartfelt appreciation for someone. The key is valuing that person in some wayThe source of appreciation is when we value something about another person: who they are, w hat they are able to do, what they know, their character qualities. When you don’t or can’t appreciate someone, the solution involves looking and exploring what about them you might value. You might value the fact that they know how to search for information well on the Internet. Or you may admire the experience and knowledge they have about your industry and competitors. Anything that makes them a better employee is a possibility â€" some specific skill or unique experience they have. But, especially with difficult-to-appreciate employees,  the characteristic you discover may not be related to work.  You may find it helpful that Sarah is really good at finding deals through Craigslist or using Groupon. From getting to know one of your coworkers, you may be amazed at the vast amount on knowledge he has about British rock groups in the ‘90s, or about growing vegetables organically, or whatever the topic may be.Similarly, you may be impressed with how committed your administrative assistant is to her children and what an amazing mother she is. Or that your IT guy trains for triathlons. You may enjoy and value the cheerful demeanor one of your team members has, and how their laugh brings a smile to your face (I personally prefer to work with cheerful people rather than irritable colleagues!).
